Bahari FM profile
Bahari FM is a Swahili-language station owned by Royal Media Services and aimed at the Kenyan Coast. A 2019 Kenyans.co.ke frequency list places it on 94.2 FM in the Nairobi listings. The Communications Authority of Kenya's June 2026 register shows Royal Media holding its commercial FM licence, issued on 13 April 2018 for ten years.
Royal Media, founded by businessman Samuel Kamau (SK) Macharia, built Kenya's largest network of vernacular radio stations in the 2000s. In a 2021 interview reported by Kenyans.co.ke, former executive Julian Macharia said the company set up about three stations a year. It deliberately targeted rural audiences and kept vernacular content apart from English programming. The report listed 13 Royal Media radio stations: Bahari FM, Radio Citizen, Ramogi FM, Inooro FM, Hot 96, Musyi FM, Chamgei FM, Muuga FM, Egesa FM, Mulembe FM, Wimwaro FM, Sulwe FM and Vuuka FM.
In June 2012 ITWeb reported that the then Communications Commission of Kenya had ordered Royal Media to surrender 24 frequencies. The regulator said they were unlicensed and interfering with other services. Bahari FM was named, with several other Royal Media vernacular brands and some Radio Citizen relays. Royal Media had 30 days to stop using them.
On the Coast, Bahari FM competes with the state broadcaster's Pwani FM. Royal Media's digital platforms carry its content and schedule.
