Chamgei FM profile

Chamgei FM is a Kalenjin-language station owned by Royal Media Services. It broadcasts in Nairobi on 90.4 FM and across the Rift Valley, to the nine Kalenjin sub-groups: the Kipsigis, Nandi, Keiyo, Tugen, Sengwer, Marakwet, Sabaot, Terik and Pokot.

The name is the Kalenjin greeting 'chamgei', meaning 'how are you', and the slogan 'Mugulel-dab Kalenjin' means 'the heart of Kalenjin'. Royal Media says Kalenjin culture runs through the programming, which mixes educational and informative features with Kalenjin music, comedy and oldies.

Beyond Nairobi, Royal Media lists 97.5 FM in the North Rift, 90.2 FM and 95.0 FM in the South Rift, and 95.0 FM in Nakuru and Baringo. The station says it draws presenters from different parts of the Kalenjin community to cater for each sub-group.

Chamgei puts weight on direct contact with listeners. Besides live call-ins, SMS and social media, it takes part in road shows, listener days, church visits, agricultural shows, and sporting and cultural events across the Rift Valley. It streams through Royal Media's radio platform and the Citizen Radio app, and its network includes Radio Citizen and Inooro FM.
