Classic 105 profile
Classic 105 is an English-language adult station owned by Radio Africa Group. It broadcasts in Nairobi on 105.2 FM. A sister to Kiss 100 and Radio Jambo, it is best known for the breakfast show Maina and King'ang'i in the Morning.
In 2016 Radio World reported that Radio Africa had decided to move Classic 105 to the front of its strategy as the original Kiss 100 audience grew older. The breakfast show, aimed at urban working listeners, was bilingual. Presenter Maina Kageni's handling of phone-ins and older music drew a large following, especially among women, and criticism from more conservative listeners.
Kageni shares the show with comedian Daniel Ndambuki, known as Churchill, who plays Mwalimu King'ang'i on air. It trades in humour and relationship advice.
In December 2021 Kageni said on air that he planned to leave radio in 2022 to start a business in the United States. Yet a 2024 Star report on Radio Africa's ratings still featured him. Presenter Nick Odhiambo spent about ten years at Classic 105 before moving to Radio Maisha in 2017.
The Realtime Analytics Kenya Media Landscape report for January to July 2024 ranked Classic 105 second, behind sister station Radio Jambo, with 4.62 per cent listenership and 6.99 per cent of radio advertising spend. Programmes controller James Njoroge credited the group's focus on content quality.
