Ghetto Radio profile
Ghetto Radio is a Nairobi station on 89.5 FM for listeners in the city's informal settlements and urban youth more widely. On air since December 2007, it is the flagship of a small media brand that also ran the websites ghettoradio.co.ke and thisisafrica.me.
It was set up to show a fuller picture of life and culture in Africa's urban ghettos. Residents, artists and others from the slums would get a channel for their own stories in music, news, poetry, graffiti and commentary. Its stated aim is news, views and entertainment by people from the urban ghetto, for listeners inside and beyond those neighbourhoods.
The Ghetto Radio Foundation was set up to help start FM stations in other African urban slums and to train motivated young people to run every role at their own station. The station's Music in Africa profile announced plans for more Ghetto Radio stations in other African cities.
That profile cited independent Consumer Eye research ranking Ghetto Radio the most popular station among 15 to 25-year-olds in Nairobi at the time. Its breakfast team then included King Kafu, Sollo and Kanana. Ownership and current presenters could not be confirmed from the sources reviewed.
