Kameme FM profile
Kameme FM is a Kikuyu-language station run by Mediamax Network, broadcasting in Nairobi on 101.1 FM. It went on air in 2000 and has called itself Kenya's pioneer vernacular station.
Media couple David and Rose Kimotho founded it through Regional Reach Limited, an advertising firm that moved into mainstream broadcasting. Kenyans.co.ke reports that they invested about Ksh40 million in the station, which targeted rural Central Kenya with music, news and culture. KBC's Coro FM and Royal Media's Inooro FM later challenged its early success, and Royal Media poached several of its best-known presenters.
The Kimothos launched K24 TV in 2007. With the business strained after the post-election violence, they struck a deal in 2009 with TV Africa Kenya Holdings, a company associated with the Kenyatta family. Communications Authority records cited by Kenyans.co.ke show Kameme FM, K24 TV and Milele FM registered under that company and managed by Mediamax Network Ltd. Rose Kimotho stayed on as chief executive until 2011.
A 2015 Music in Africa profile listed it on 101.1 FM in Nairobi and its environs, 92.3 FM in Nyeri and Nanyuki, 99.3 FM in Nakuru, 101.9 FM in Eldoret, 97.6 FM in Mombasa, 100.7 FM in Narok and 106.7 FM in Meru. Mediamax also runs Kameme TV, Milele FM and several other vernacular radio stations.
