KASS FM profile

Kass FM is a Kalenjin-language commercial station broadcasting from Nairobi. A 2019 Kenyans.co.ke frequency list puts it on 89.1 FM. The Communications Authority of Kenya's June 2026 register shows its FM licence, issued on 25 March 2020 for ten years, held by Kalee Limited. Kalee shares a Nairobi postal address with Kass Media Group Ltd, which holds the Kass TV licence and gives Kalenjin listeners television as well as radio in their language.

Its core audience is Kalenjin speakers, many of them in the Rift Valley. That political and regional weight drew Kass FM into a clash with the state in November 2005. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that the then Communications Commission of Kenya suspended it before the referendum on a proposed constitution. Government spokesman Alfred Mutua accused the station of inciting ethnic hatred.

Journalists and opposition politicians called the move politically motivated, noting the station's criticism of the draft constitution. Voters went on to reject that draft. CPJ said the regulator gave no prior warning and asked for 21 days of broadcast recordings.

After protests from Rift Valley MPs, the Kenya Union of Journalists and press freedom groups, Kass FM was back on air on 18 November 2005. The Nation reported that its owner, named by CPJ as C.K. Joshua, agreed to submit recordings to the regulator for 90 days.
