Radio Citizen is a national Kiswahili station owned by Royal Media Services (RMS). It broadcasts from Nairobi on 106.7 FM. Royal Media calls it one of its two flagship brands, and for years it has ranked as Kenya's most listened-to radio station.
It went on air in 1999. Through the 2000s Royal Media, led by chairman S.K. Macharia, built a large regional network around it, opening several stations a year and aiming deliberately at rural listeners rather than Nairobi. Sister stations today include Inooro FM, Ramogi FM, Hot 96, Musyi FM, Chamgei FM, Muuga FM, Egesa FM, Bahari FM, Mulembe FM, Wimwaro FM, Sulwe FM and Vuuka FM. The group also runs Citizen TV.
Royal Media pitches it as a family station for every Kenyan, from schoolchildren to retirees. News and entertainment sit alongside talk on national issues such as health, the economy, education and the environment.
On weekdays the Royal Media website lists Pambazuka (4am to 6am), the Jambo Kenya breakfast magazine (6am to 10am), Waks Tiki Taka with Bensu, Q-tee and DJ Ronixx, the afternoon Mambo Mseto, Drive On in the evening and Good Evening Kenya late at night. Weekends bring Roga Roga with veteran broadcaster Fred Obachi Machoka, the sports show Michezo na Burudani and the gospel chart show Wingu la Baraka with Selly Kadot Amutabi.
In August 2018 several familiar voices, including Pambazuka host Joyce Gituro, left for rival Milele FM. Vincent Ateya came in to host Jambo Kenya with Inspector Mwala, and Selly Kadot Amutabi moved to Pambazuka.
