Radio Jambo profile
Radio Jambo is a national Swahili station owned by Radio Africa Group. It broadcasts in Nairobi on 97.5 FM, with Kiss 100 and Classic 105 as sister stations.
Radio Africa launched it in 2009. Music director James Njoroge told Radio World in 2016 that the group saw room for a big national station offering something different from KBC and Radio Citizen. It began with a wide footprint of about 19 transmitters.
At first it was mostly a Swahili sports station, built on local football and the European leagues. It later broadened into a general, mass-appeal station and reached deeper into the lower-income market. By 2016 there was also an offshoot, Radio Jambo Turkana, with studios in Turkana. Radio Jambo was then the group's only station carrying live news bulletins.
Entrepreneurs Patrick Quarcoo and William Pike founded Radio Africa Group with Kiss 100 in 2000. Later additions include Classic 105, Radio Jambo, X FM, East FM, Gukena FM, a television station and The Star newspaper.
The Realtime Analytics Kenya Media Landscape report for January to July 2024 ranked Radio Jambo first nationally, with 15.5 per cent listenership. It also took the largest share of radio advertising spend, 10.6 per cent, ahead of Classic 105. Coverage featured presenters Ghost Mulee and Gidi, and Mbusi and Lion.
